History I, Ryan Parrish, was a working hairstylist for 34 years. I am also the inventor of “the Xzacta Shears Ultimate Scissor Sharpening System”. A while back, I was working on formulating a scissor/ shears lubricant. I came up with a great idea. What if I could make a scissor lube that was also good for the nails, hands, and feet? The first thing I knew for sure was that absolutely no petroleum or petroleum derived ingredients could be in the scissor lubrication formulation as they all dry the skin with extended use. I also made a decision to use “no” animal or even animal derived (like bees wax) ingredients. At this point it was obvious that we were going to be using 100% vegetable ingredients. Let’s shoot for the stars and make it all organic, natural, or wild-crafted. Research soon convinced me that I could do all the above and still have a scissor lubricant that was outstanding. Vegetable derived lubricants were used extensively during W.W. II. And they are being used more and more today and even required by law in some European Countries. Many of the vegetable lubricants are even superior to petroleum based products. The proportions are critical to achieve the goals of scissor lubrication, nail, hand, and foot care. Most of the oils are cold processed (extra virgin). Some are expeller processed. The essential oils are all derived by steam distillation. There are a few of the exotic oils or waxes in which native people do use heat as it is the only way to derive them without using petroleum distillates. There are no alcohols of any kind used. This is truly a luxurious product that does it’s job as a scissor lubricant while pampering your skin and nails. You’re gonna love this stuff!

note: below are the old instructions until Xzacta Shears Scissor Serum was developed. There is still much information below that is relevant. We just know now that with the advent of scissor serum that you do not need to expose your scissors to water and detergents as you may once have. And please don't use those alchohol and wax combinations!
1. Daily..Spray with plain water and gently wipe with a clean towel or paper towel
2. Weekly.. Rinse under warm to hot running water opening and closing the blades and gently dry the pair of scissors with a clean towel or paper towel. We do not recommend "soap" or dish washing detergent unless there is heavy product build up. Water is usually sufficient and it does not totally strip the existing lubrication. I know this is contrary to what many will tell you. If there is product build-up, then use detergent and water. If you are doing routine maintenance this should not be necessary. Water is the universal solvent.
After drying..Apply a few drops of oil to the screw and pivot area of the hair scissors. Massage out the length of the blades. Gently wipe the blades of the shears with “clean” towel or paper towel. Please be careful.
3. Be careful....Don't cut yourself!
Questions:
1. What kind of oil should I use? "edited 5-29-09" Xzacta Shears is about to introduce a 100% VEGAN LUBRICANT that is just absolutely outstanding. It is revolutionary to the industry. It contains over 16 organic vegetable oils and waxes that are green...green..green... and work..work..work! More than 80% biodegradable. NO SOLVENTS, PETROLEUM, OR DISTILLATES OF ANY KIND. Another revolutionary from Xzacta Shears. Most of the oils and waxes are extra virgin, cold processed, expeller, and/or unfiltered. Not only that... it smells good, is outstanding on your hands and feet, has anti-microbal properties, loaded with anti-oxidants, all organic, naturally loaded with vitamin E and other anti-oxidants, and believe it or not, makes and incredible furniture polish...for real. For traditional lubrication...read on please! Clipper oil is fine or commercial scissor oil. Do not use sprays as some of the propellants can slowly dissolve nylon and plastic washers. We do not recommend alcohol and wax lubricants as it has been our experience that they can cause rusting. Stainless steel does rust ya know. If you get significant rust in the ride line (the thin shiny line that should be along the inside edge of your scissor blades), your hair scissors may be ready for the archives. Don’t let it happen…..oil baby, oil!!!
2. How often should I clean and lubricate? Daily would be great, but I know most of you are not going to do that. Please do this a minimum of once a week and for Pete's sake no less than once a month would be pretty nice.
3. Should I take them apart to clean and oil? I recommend that you leave this to your professional scissors sharpener. There are very tiny parts in most scissors that can be hard to replace if lost.
4. Do I have to oil my colored shears? Absolutely! While it is highly unlikely that the coatings will corrode, they are not protected on the inside of the pivot area or on the cutting edge and ride line.
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS:
1. I have little nicks in my blades of my pair of shears that I can feel when I cut hair. What should I do? Stop using immediately and call your Pro. It will only get worse with use and cause more damage
2. It is best not to place on top of your styling station, although I used to do that and I know most of us do. But, please do not put them either under or on top of a towel!!! This is the number one cause of them ending up on the floor, the washing machine, or the garbage can. Putting them in a padded drawer is great if you are not going to put them in a case or scissor belt.
SCISSOR CLEANING NO-N0'S!!
DO NOT USE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
1. Disinfectants such as bleach (sodium hypochlorite).
2. Any cleaning agents that contain CHLORIDES such as salt or table salt. CHLORIDES are a deadly enemy of stainless steel and your hair cutting scissors or shears. Remember that human sweat contains salt in it. This is one reason why rinsing should be routine especially if you do dry cutting without prior washing as many barbers and many cosmetologist also. And, please don't forget to clean and oil, oil, oil your clipper blades.
3. Cleansers for silver often contain chlorides and harsh acids. They are made for silver and should never be used on stainless steel or your hair stylist shears.
4. Steel wool such as Brillo pads etc. are definitely destructive.
5. Do not use buffing compounds. Leave this to your professional scissor sharpener to remove scratches or if you want a little more shine on your blades.
6. The best advice is....DON'T EXPERIMENT PLEASE.
